Even though Abbe May's last album 'Howl and Moan' established her as a songwriter to be reckoned with (it was even Jagermeister AIR Award Nominated), the opening single from her upcoming album Design Desire is what's really got me hooked on her. 'Mammalian Locomotion' was one of the standout Australian tracks of 2010, Abbe May's juxtaposition of unhinged hard blues and light-as-air reverb drenched vocals was kinda thrilling. Abbe's trademark balls-to-the-wall riffage was present but the track showed a new emphasis on atmosphere and melody... the fact that the subtler aspects of the song lent themselves to a stunning remix by Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and Cam Avery (DOWNLOAD IT HERE) speaks volumes for the direction in which she's heading.
The title track to her upcoming album, 'Design Desire' is a pretty rad follow-up. It's everything a driving song should be, rumbling bass, driving riffs and sexy vocals... the psychedelic clip (kaleidoscopic imagery of Abbe dressed to kill in the back of a vintage car screaming across desert flats) sums up the track far better than any words could.
Two singles into the new album and she's got a perfect strike rate. It'll be out through Sandcastle Music in a couple of months... can't wait!
