Daniel Lee Kendall's earlier single 'lost in the moment' reminded me bit of Jack Johnson... if Jack Johnson had sense of humour. (Daniel's cute vibraphone licks and whistle solo in that song are so delightfully twee that I can forgive him that comparison).
Despite that comparison and my misgivings when it comes to the music of Hawaiian Mr. Johnson we've delved a little into Daniels back catalogue... and we need to give the guy some credit. Sure he's got an aesthetic preference for laid back performance but there are clever arrangements, atmospheric touches and musical flourishes that hint at an attention to detail and musical thought that makes a songwriter stand out from the crowd. Songs like ''The Long Way' and 'The Point Is This' from his debut EP are moody and atmospherically textured, the music traverses accoustic pop, whistful balladry and glitchy pitter patter electronica. It's compelling, melodic and very easy to like.
The lead track 'hold me now' off Daniel's soon to be released EP (this friday, through Redcat Sounds) is a sweet and uplifting piano pop ditty, its a good starting point but we can't wait to hear more from a true understated talent.
