San Cisco

Three well hyped bands who we've covered on this blog in the last year have since changed their name... we're sensing a pattern.
1. Danimals made impressive career headway (recorded in the USA with Mark Ronson, Santigold and Shaun Lennon no less) before changing their name to Djanimals because of a yogurt company.
2. Howl made a stunning home-made clip which made waves worldwide before changing their name to Hunting Ground (because "Howl is too hard to Google")
3. DZ have changed themselves into DZ Deathrays which is a way better name anyway... if you ask me...
It would seem that changing a band name early in a bourgeoning career is a wise career move, so you've got to give it to San Cisco who've changed their name from King George before the hype has even reached them... well only just before the hype has reached them.
While Tame Impala, their buddies from down the road in Fremantle used late 60's psychadelia as their musical palate, San Cisco take their cues from from an earlier time, when songwriters of the early 1960's were first mastering the art and testing the limits of the pop song. It seems like San Cisco approach this songwriting caper without the weight of 50 years of pop history. They treat pop music as if they were making up the genre, discovering its possibilities. So clean and fresh, so simple and timeless.
With a soon to be released debut EP produced by the inimitable Steve Schram, armed with a bottomless well of summer hooks, group choruses and wide-eyed enthusiasm, San Cisco have just arrived. File them with Little Red and maybe file them with The Beatles. Pop music as it was intended.
